I love doing a transformation, aka making people feel sexy when they look good. I warmed up the ash blonde with Redken Shades EQ then hand painted using a balayage. I highlighted with Solaris, creating a warm golden blonde.

Monday’s Muse: Michelle Monaghan

On March 21, 2016 by Corey Powell

Muse: A woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.

I have had the good fortune of working with the beautiful, talented Michelle Monaghan for a few years now. Michelle was referred to me by the talented Ann Morgan (on-set hair designer extraordinaire). Ann was creating a look for HBO’S True Detective and needed some color and highlights for Michelle’s character. Monaghan, Morgan and I have worked together on many projects. For The Best Of Me, we lightened the base and added some balayage highlights to create cool, golden tones. We even lighted the eye brows to create a #GoldenGoddess. We gave her a bit darker and very natural look for Fort Bliss. Pixels was fun; for that film we kept a warm dark base and put in some lighter highlights around her face to add some brightness. Her look in Sleepless Night, was overall darker, with a few strategic balayage highlights to create light and movement. The biggest challenge with Michelle’s hair is keeping it from going warm/brassy.

FYI, Michelle is also a fanfunkintastic girl, wonderful mother and a sexy wife. Love her! Thank you Michelle and Morgan!

2016 SAG Awards Celebrity Hair: Mostly Hot, Some Not

So many of the celebrity attendees at this year’s SAG Awards were absolutely hot– we’re talking flattering hair color changes, perfectly messy ballerina buns, middle parts– while some sadly were not so hot. Watch my new recap video and find out who’s always got it and who fell short.

The Girls of “Into The Badlands”

On January 7, 2016 by Corey Powell

My good friend Anne Morgan asked me to help her create amazing hair color for the girls on AMC’s show Into The Badlands. We collaborated on creating colors that fit each character– a creative process that I love.

Clockwise from top left: Orla Brady (Lydia), Sarah Bolger (Jade), Emily Beecham (The Widow), Ellen Hollman (Zypher)

Morgan and I decided to make Lydia, played by Orla Brady, a brunette with cool, golden hues.

Jade, played by Sarah Bolger, was to be an angelic blonde.

The Widow, played by Emily Beecham would be perfect with vibrant, cool, copper-red.

And Zypher, played by Ellen Hollman, would look fantastic with icy platinum blonde with a smoky root.

Then, I was flown to New Orleans to work my magic. During the two-day, 10-hour project we faced a power outage and even a tornado scare in the middle of my creating Sarah Bolger’s (Jade) look– even under normal circumstances transforming a reddish brunette to an angelic blonde is no easy task. I was down to the wire for the film test and my flight home. Luckily, I thrive under pressure (I am The King of Blonde, after all!) and the end result was stunning. Ellen Hollman (Zypher) was up next, and we all loved her final look.

This was such a fun project for a great show. Thank you again, Morgan!

Margot Robbie

On October 26, 2015 by Corey Powell

To MUSE is to consider something thoughtfully. A muse is a person–especially a woman–who is a source of artistic inspiration.

In 2013, Ann Morgan asked if I could do Margot Robbie’s color for her character Jess in the movie “Focus.” I made her really blonde by softening her base and adding lots of balayage highlights. (She’s such a beauty and very sweet, so it was great working with her.) Harpers Bazaar named her Golden Globes red carpet look the Most Sought After Hair Color of 2014. She looked so damn hot!

Ms. Robbie went home to Australia and went brunette for her role in “Z For Zachariah” and showed up at The Academy Awards with long, dark retro waves. Then she was off to London, where she went strawberry blonde for “Tarzan.” For her role in “Suicide Squad”, Margot went platinum blonde with some blue and pink streaks–her look is amazing and so much fun.

On the August 2015 cover of Elle magazine, she looks stunning as an apricot blonde, which is a must-have hair color for anyone looking for a change. No matter what Margot Robbie does with her hair color, she’s HOT.

#fbf I had the privilege of doing Kim’s color for a few years, she’s amazing by the way, and yes gorgeous. One of the movies we worked together on was “SENTINEL.” I did some Balayage highlights to create a dimensional blonde with baby blonde pops. #kingofblonde #coreypaints

#transformationtuesday….No more Ombré

On September 1, 2015 by Corey Powell

This adorable girl Val Pina  comes in with 8 inch dark re growth and the rest of it is over bleached. She shows me some pix of she wants pretty hair now, said she did the pink, blue, purple and grays, now she wants sexy pretty natural looking hair. Val spent the afternoon with my team and I at Sally Hershberger LA, filling, smudging, toning, low-lighting, Balayage highlighting, thank god for Brizilian BondBuilder 3R and Olaplex.. Looks pretty damn sexy for the first go around for color correction.  What you think!
