The Girls of “Into The Badlands”

On January 7, 2016 by Corey Powell

My good friend Anne Morgan asked me to help her create amazing hair color for the girls on AMC’s show Into The Badlands. We collaborated on creating colors that fit each character– a creative process that I love.

Clockwise from top left: Orla Brady (Lydia), Sarah Bolger (Jade), Emily Beecham (The Widow), Ellen Hollman (Zypher)

Morgan and I decided to make Lydia, played by Orla Brady, a brunette with cool, golden hues.

Jade, played by Sarah Bolger, was to be an angelic blonde.

The Widow, played by Emily Beecham would be perfect with vibrant, cool, copper-red.

And Zypher, played by Ellen Hollman, would look fantastic with icy platinum blonde with a smoky root.

Then, I was flown to New Orleans to work my magic. During the two-day, 10-hour project we faced a power outage and even a tornado scare in the middle of my creating Sarah Bolger’s (Jade) look– even under normal circumstances transforming a reddish brunette to an angelic blonde is no easy task. I was down to the wire for the film test and my flight home. Luckily, I thrive under pressure (I am The King of Blonde, after all!) and the end result was stunning. Ellen Hollman (Zypher) was up next, and we all loved her final look.

This was such a fun project for a great show. Thank you again, Morgan!

Margot Robbie

To MUSE is to consider something thoughtfully. A muse is a person–especially a woman–who is a source of artistic inspiration.

In 2013, Ann Morgan asked if I could do Margot Robbie’s color for her character Jess in the movie “Focus.” I made her really blonde by softening her base and adding lots of balayage highlights. (She’s such a beauty and very sweet, so it was great working with her.) Harpers Bazaar named her Golden Globes red carpet look the Most Sought After Hair Color of 2014. She looked so damn hot!

Ms. Robbie went home to Australia and went brunette for her role in “Z For Zachariah” and showed up at The Academy Awards with long, dark retro waves. Then she was off to London, where she went strawberry blonde for “Tarzan.” For her role in “Suicide Squad”, Margot went platinum blonde with some blue and pink streaks–her look is amazing and so much fun.

On the August 2015 cover of Elle magazine, she looks stunning as an apricot blonde, which is a must-have hair color for anyone looking for a change. No matter what Margot Robbie does with her hair color, she’s HOT.

#fbf I had the privilege of doing Kim’s color for a few years, she’s amazing by the way, and yes gorgeous. One of the movies we worked together on was “SENTINEL.” I did some Balayage highlights to create a dimensional blonde with baby blonde pops. #kingofblonde #coreypaints

Looks pretty damn sexy for the first go around for color correction.  What you think!

#MakeoverMonday Featuring Nicole

On June 29, 2015 by Corey Powell

Nicole has been coming in to get a bleach and tone for a while. Last time she came in she said, “I want healthy long hair.” So when she came in this time we decided on a medium brown color. Nicole’s hair is naturally almost black, so looks pretty natural, I think.

I love working with Nicole because she’s not afraid to try new things. As a transgender person, she pull off almost anything!

What do you guys think, do you like her better blonde or brunette?

#MakeoverMonday featuring Into The Badland’s Ellen Hollman

On June 8, 2015 by Corey Powell

IMG_7542Ellen Hollman was referred to me by Ann Morgan – the key hairdresser on AMC’s new TV show, ‘Into The Badlands’. The show needed Ellen to go platinum blonde for her character, Zypher. This was a super fun and challenging job. I love it, they love it!

Celebrity Spotlight: Why I Love Beth Behr’s Color

On June 2, 2015 by Corey Powell

IMG_7168My client, the beautiful Beth Behrs plays Caroline Channing on 2 Broke Girls. I love working with her.

When we meet up, I do a blonde on blonde – smudging her base to make her a little lighter then her natural color. Then, I paint some balayage highlights. Last season we #lobbed her hair off with a side bang. As of recently she’s been growing  her bangs out.

It’s good to mix it up, change it. She looks fabulous nomatter her hairstyle. As you can see in the photos, her color really accentuates her beautiful face, skin, and eyes, making everything pop!
